An affluent and densely populated area, Kensington is part of West London, bordered by Notting Hill to the north and Knightsbridge to the east. One of Kensington's most famous landmarks is the Royal Albert Hall, a monumental arts venue dedicated to Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert. The name of the hall was originally to be 'The Central Hall of Arts and Sciences' however, after the death of Prince Albert, and at Queen Victoria’s request, the name was changed to the Albert Hall. Its iconic oval design has made it one of London’s most recognised landmarks. A Grecian mosaic frieze depicting the ‘Triumph of Arts and Science’ encircles the exterior of the building and praises the achievements of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Since its opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the Albert Hall has hosted some of the world’s leading artists and performers.
